Students from Year 4 and 6 were selected to be part of the Mindstorm robotics program at St Aidan’s Primary, Rooty Hill to enhance their learning experience through the use of robotics.

The program gives students a team-centred and project-based learning experience as they build different robots with the LEGO Mindstorms RCX Robotics Invention System, programming them with iPads to move and react to solve challenges.

These students are exposed to the early stages of engineering and project work as they are tasked with working through specific challenges and problem solving in their groups.

Librarian and learning technology support teacher (LTST), Grace Carlo-Stello, said the students were learning basic engineering skills while

‘Students gain a holistic learning experience through mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork and are fully engaged in this fun and challenging activity,’ said Grace.

In their next project, students will be demonstrating how robotics can be used to make daily life more convenient.

Principal, Elizabeth Ricketts, said parents will be given a robotics demonstration in Term 3, during a parent workshop aimed at educating how technology is best used for learning and teaching.

‘We received great feedback from parents about the Mindstorm robotics program as they were thrilled to learn the experience their child would get from this unique learning environment,’ said Elizabeth.
